Leading Innovation Award
Award overview

The Leading Innovation Award recognises an individual, team or organisation that has delivered a novel, evidence‑led solution to a clearly defined environmental health challenge, achieving measurable benefits for people and/or the environment. It is intended for practical innovations - such as tools, processes, policies, services or partnerships - that others in the profession could adapt or adopt.

Entries should relate to work active between 1 January 2025 and 10 May 2026. Projects do not need to have concluded, although judges will place particular emphasis on progress to date and the quality of evaluation.

Who can enter
  • Open to individuals, teams, partnerships and organisations working in any environmental health discipline worldwide.
  • Entries may be self‑nominated or nominated by others.
  • The nominator must be a CIEH member.
  • For team or organisational entries, at least one team member must be a CIEH member.
  • Previous winners may enter again with a different project or a demonstrably new phase of work.
  • Multiple entries may be submitted.
What to submit

We ask you to provide:
  • A short overarching summary outlining the innovation, who it serves and the value it delivers (max 100 words).
  • Project or innovation details covering the context, objectives, the innovative solution, delivery approach, collaboration, measurement, evaluation, outcomes, impact, lessons learned and next steps (up to 800 words).
  • Supporting evidence, with up to four attachments.

How entries will be judged
  • Innovation and originality - demonstrates a clear departure from standard practice and a strong fit to the stated problem; creativity is purposeful and evidence‑informed.
  • Relevance and problem definition - clearly defines the need and shows material, evidenced benefits for people, teams and/or communities and the environment; reflects understanding of affected populations, context, constraints and risks.
  • Evidence, measurement and evaluation - uses appropriate data and methods to track outputs, outcomes and learning, including independent feedback where possible.
  • Value for money - delivers strong outcomes relative to the resources invested, demonstrating efficiency and prudent use of funds.
