Dear colleague,

One of the strategic aims of BAPM is to provide support and advocacy for neonatal professionals. We have received several requests from members, for BAPM to describe acceptable work patterns for neonatal consultants which are consistent with modern neonatal practice. Such work patterns will need to balance acceptable and safe working hours, consultant-led care and appropriate supervision of trainees, continuity of patient care, family and work-life balance, and the many managerial responsibilities demanded of consultants throughout different stages of our career.

Our collective experience (positive and negative) of working in a speciality that can be both rewarding and stressful at the same time should be used to ensure that our speciality remains an attractive option for doctors.

As a starting point, we would like to describe current working patterns for neonatal consultants across the UK. We are looking both for exemplars of working patterns for neonatal consultants and to understand some of the challenges that you face.

The following anonymised questionnaire takes around 15 minutes to complete. If you are a consultant working in the British Isles covering any level of neonatal service please do take the time to help us better understand this matter for the benefit of both present and future neonatologists.
